THE CHRONOLOGY OF THE BJP BECOMING CONGRESS 2.0
Among the laundry list of good stuff that the Congress did since independence, they have their list of sins too. They almost legalized corruption. Their appeasement politics irked the remaining majority. They went after opponents constitutionally, many times extra-constitutionally. They manoeuvred laws, many times created laws to favour their network. They allowed red tape everywhere that every business leader, in India and outside would not hesitate to talk about it. Indian economy grew, but India continued to be poor, with our per capita ranked in the 100s. It continues to!
The BJP also has its own laundry list of good stuff. Infra development, defence superiority, growth in innovation, growth in manufacturing. But have they ended up becoming Congress 2.0 in the sins as well?
THE CHRONLOGY OF VENDATTA POLITICS
BJP rose to power from its fight against Congress on corruption. When AAP came in and challenged them on clean politics, BJP had to play with AAP's image. AAP had to be termed a corrupt party and Kejriwal dishonest. BJP achieved this in the run-up to the last Delhi elections, but where are we today? And where are all those cases that the Government agencies had framed against opponents and non-conformists?

GVK in airport case - charges dropped by CBI
In many of the recent acquittals, the courts have came down heavily on the agencies, even going on to impose fines and ordering counter-investigations against them.
If we have to respect the legal system, the same system that also acquitted Modi in the 2002 riots, then either these are false cases or the Government is extremely incompetent. Both are bad for the nation. But when 98% of central agency cases involve the opposition, and when there have been only 2 convictions in the last 10 years out of the 193 cases, there is not much to talk about this!
But all that aside, where is the BJP itself on corruption? Yes, Rafale is investigated in France, but not in India. Adani is investigated in Australia, but not in India. Reliance is investigated in the US, but not in India. But what happened to the cases that actually did exist? The chronology of many events seem too fishy to ignore!

In all these cases - there are allegations that there were raids followed by donations or donations followed by projects. Not long ago, the nation had called this corruption. There is a report that around 2500 cr in electoral bonds were credited to the BJP post raids on 41 corporate houses. There is absolutely no problem if all of these were bona fide cases, but were they?

There is a report on how since 2014, 25 opposition leaders facing corruption probe crossed over to BJP, and 23 of them have got reprieve so far. Anyone who wants to justify that the tainted have become clean after joining the BJP and so their past sins can be forgiven - one, that is exactly the accusation against the BJP and two, many of them continue to be alleged into new scams even now - for example, Himanta in PM Kisan Sampada Yojna, Suvendu in coal scam, Ajit Pawar in land scam, Narayan Rane in electoral scam.
More than 30% of BJP MPs have criminal cases against them. Forget about the promise that Modi made to jail tainted politicians even if from his own party, the way the unification has been done across parties and across the country could make even Sardar Patel proud!
MODI HAS ANOTHER 3 YEARS THIS TERM, THERE'S A LOT HE CAN DO. BUT WILL HE?
From promising "minimum government, maximum governance", "cooperative federalism", "full statehood for Delhi", "bringing fuel and gas prices down" to saying things like "making Americans stand in queue for Indian visas", to proclaiming that "weak Rupee means weak Government", to asking "if China did not enter our territory, where are they retreating from now", it seems like we are still in 2013. it almost looks like the country voted out the Congress, but that the Congress can never be removed.
Is this what Rahul Gandhi meant when he claimed Congress is India's default program?
If Modi just does the things he said he will do in the run up to the 2014 elections, India should have been a developed nation by now. But our GDP per capita, the primary metric for a developed nation is still in the ruins. Forget about election promises, if Modi takes all the schemes he announced between 2014-16 to completion, his name will forever be etched in the country's history. Instead, for every failure, there is a reference to Nehru who died 60 years back. For every question, there is a reference to Congress in spite of being the single party that has ruled the most in the centre and the states in the last 25 years. Not that Modi has not done anything, but every PM before him has also done a lot for this country.
Let's take Manmohan Singh for example, Modi's predecessor. MMS delivered a better GDP growth for a 10-year term than Modi has (7.8% against 6.6%), and this was even before the current and previous controversies around GDP calculations. The "India story" that we talk about today, started in 2008 when the world GDP was falling, but India's was rising. Right to information, right to education, food security, nuclear agreement, Aadhar, land acquisition act - MMS had his laundry list as well. His Government was accused to have done "nothing", but the Modi Government seems to be not able to maintain even some of these "nothing" numbers. For example, Child Wasting in India was at 15.1% in 2014 but has fallen to 18.7% in 2024. Anaemia in women has fallen from 53.1% to 57%. Undernourishment has fallen from 14.8% to 16.3%. Forget about health, for all the global leadership claims, Henley passport index for India has fallen from 76 to 85.
If Modi just focuses on "doing" than "winning" for the rest of this term, his party may win again. But if he goes after winning, I am not sure if he will be able to do enough. In the interest of the nation, I hope he does, I hope he delivers!
